History of Black Star Farms

Black Star Farms was founded in 1998 near Traverse City, MI. The gorgeous, scenic venue has become a true one-of-a-kind destination nestled among the rolling hills of the Leelanau Peninsula. The international acclaimed wines, luxurious Inn, decadent wine paired culinary events and unparalleled hospitality has become a unique way for wine lovers to retreat to the heart of Northern Michigan Wine Country.

In 2007 Black Star Farms Old Mission opened in what used to be the popular Underwood Farms. It now houses a state of the art wine processing facility and cozy tasting room surrounded by views of vineyards, orchards, and Grand Traverse Bay. The Wineries at Black Star Farms have achieved state, national, and international awards for their exceptional wines and spirits.

What’s one of your favorite moments at one of your weddings?

COVID brought multiple events to a halt. There were date changes and mandate changes and changes galore. However, working around them and seeing our couples dream days come true has been a highlight of my career. Especially after all the struggles.

What are your favorite design elements of Black Star Farms?

The property is so gorgeous. I love the vineyard because of the water views and the natural elements to being surrounds by grape vines; the Pegasus Barn is pretty fantastic too! We keep our venues neutral so our couples can create their own vision for their wedding day!

How many people can your space hold?

The space can hold up to 150 guests.

Is there a set schedule at Black Star Farms?

Our venue has a cutoff time of 10:00pm. This is because of township ordinances. Because of the limitations, we typically start our ceremonies between 3 and 4pm.

Am I able to bring in my own vendors or do I have to choose from a list?

Black Star Farms has a preferred vendor list, but you are welcome to use any vendors you would like to use. If you prefer to bring your own, we ask that they be licensed and insured as professional vendors.

What time are my vendors able to set up the day of the wedding?

Vendors are able to begin setting up at 10:00am the day of your event.

Do you offer coordination and if so what does that entail?

We handle anything Black Star Farms provides This means we will take care of the timeline once you arrive, the setup of all items we provide, service staff, food, beverage, and the tear down.

Can couples bring on their own alcohol?

Couples can bring in the own spirits and beer. However, we do require client to use Black Star Farms wines.

If I bring in my own caterer, is there a kitchen for them to use?

We require all food and beverage to be provided by Black Star Farms with the exception of niche desserts. This includes traditional goodies like a wedding cake.

Is there a food and beverage minimum?

Yes, there is a minimum. The food and beverage minimums are based on the estimated number of guests at the time of booking.

Do you have an inclement weather space for outdoor activities?

We have a ceremony weather back up; we make the call at 9am the day of your event based on the hourly forecast and radar.

How many hours are included in renting the space?

There are 7 hours reserved for the event.

Can we have multiple events? ie; rehearsal dinner, welcome party, after the wedding brunch, etc.

Yes, we book all events separately. You can also rent all 10 inn guests room if they are available and make a weekend of it!

Are there “getting ready” areas?

We have a finishing touches suite; clients have access at 9am the day of their event and it can accommodate up to 6 people.

Do you have any overnight accommodations onsite?

We have a 10 room inn which can sleep up to 22 guests. This is such a fan favorite because families really enjoy being able to wake up together at the same place as the wedding.

What else do you want to share about Black Star Farms?

We are an award winning property in events, food & wine, as well as our Inn. We take pride in each of our events and enjoy that our couples return for their anniversary’s to experience the same great service they received on their wedding day!
